What knit works best?

Cotton jersey (5-7 oz) or cotton-modal blend gives the classic Henley feel. Slub jersey adds texture.

Do I need a serger?

A serger gives the best finish on knit seams, but you can use a stretch stitch or narrow zigzag on a standard machine.
