Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get crisp collar edges on a knit polo?

Interface the upper collar piece before sewing. Sew the upper and under collar together on three sides (RST), clip the corners, turn right side out, and press firmly. The interfacing plus the sewn-and-turned method creates the sharp fold characteristic of a classic polo collar.

Can I use a readymade collar instead of cutting my own?

Yes. Readymade knit collar pieces (sometimes called polo collar ribbing) are available from specialty sewing suppliers and can be sewn directly to your neckline. The pattern includes a self-fabric collar as the default.

What fabric is a polo shirt made from?

Piqué (the textured waffle-weave knit) is the classic choice. Cotton interlock or poly interlock also work well and produce a slightly smoother look. The sleeve cuffs are cut from a stiffer rib knit.
